Scotland’s victory over Ukraine at Hampden Park on Wednesday marked the start of the action. Wales and England, though, have not fared as well.
Gareth Southgate’s team was relegated to League B following Friday’s 1-0 loss at the San Siro ahead of Monday night’s 3-3 draw with Germany at Wembley. After losing 1-0 at home to Poland on Sunday and 2-1 to Belgium on Thursday, Wales joined the Three Lions in being demoted.
However, Scotland is one point from being promoted to the top division, which would ensure them a playoff position for Euro 2024, while Croatia, the Netherlands, and Italy secured their spots in the championship game with victories on Sunday and Monday.
How does the Nations League work?
Four leagues have been created for Europe’s teams, with A, B, and C each having 16 clubs, and D having seven. League D features one group of four and one of three, whereas Leagues A, B, and C have been divided into four groups of four each.
Teams in a group are playing each other both at home and away. The clubs placing worst in their groups in Leagues A, B, and C will be demoted to the lower level, while the group winners in Leagues B, C, and D will be promoted to the next league above.
The four League A group winners will advance to the finals, which will be contested next summer, while there is no relegation from League D.
What else is at stake?
The draw will be made on October 9 and the matches will take place between March and November 2023. Performance in the Nations League will also be taken into consideration to decide seeding for Euro 2024 qualification.
Teams who do not qualify for Euro 2024 can still participate in the tournament by winning the play-offs, which are determined by Nations League standings.
Leagues A, B, and C’s top-finishing clubs in each group that do not automatically qualify for Euro 2024 will advance to the play-offs, which will take place in March 2024.
Each league’s play-off division will include four teams, with semifinal and final matches deciding which teams, one from Leagues A, B, and C, will be guaranteed a spot at Euro 2024.
